Did you know that caring for your braces is important to ensure that they can continue to work correctly and effectively for the duration of your orthodontic treatment? Braces will not prevent or stop tooth decay or gum disease, so it is important to continue to protect your teeth as usual and clean your braces as well. Listed below are some frequently asked questions about cleaning and caring for your braces:

Question: How do you take care of your braces?
– You should care for your braces in a similar manner as you would for your normal teeth. Try to avoid contact sports, or if you must play, always wear the appropriate safety gear. Also, remember to always brush your teeth twice daily and floss once daily as well.

Question: What foods should you avoid to keep your braces clean?
– Avoid tough and chewy foods that may be too hard for your teeth. They can bend or crack your braces. Also, avoid chewy or sticky foods that can get stuck in the hidden recesses between the braces and your teeth, making it very difficult to remove the residue without damaging the braces.

Question: What should you do if your braces break?
– If your braces snap or break, do not attempt to fix them yourselves. Never cut any wires or parts at they can immediately become choking hazards. If a wire is sticking out, cover it with a piece of wax and call your orthodontist as soon as you can.
