Do you notice little white deposits growing on your orthodontic retainer? If so, that substance is plaque, and it’s very dangerous for your smile. When you see this substance on your retainer, it’s best to remove it as soon as possible. Plus, removing the plaque can also help you prevent a smelly appliance. To help you clean your retainer and keep plaque at bay, our orthodontist, Dr. Joseph Wilson, has some tips for you.
To begin, rinse your retainer with white vinegar. All you need to do is place the appliance in a cup filled with the liquid. Keep it submerged for about 5 minutes. This will help loosen the plaque deposits and make it easier to eliminate them. When the time expires, grab an extra toothbrush that isn’t being used and scrub the appliance. This should remove the plaque from the wires and plastic. After you’re done eradicating the bacteria, place non-abrasive toothpaste on the toothbrush bristles and scrub the retainer one more time. This will help remove the vinegar taste when you put the appliance back in your mouth.
